Farhaad

Farhād is remembered as a legendary lover and a heroic figure in Persian legend and literature. He was immortalized by the Persian poet, Nizami ġhanjavi in his narrative of Khosrow and Shirin. Khosrow and Shirin were madly in love with each other but circumstances never permitted them to unite. Khosrwo had to face a queer fate as, in spite of loving Shirin, he had to marry the daughter of a king to gain military advantage and defeat a usurper who had claimed the king’s throne. The King, however, forbade him to marry Shirin as long as his daughter was alive. During this time, a sculptor named Farhād fell in love with Shirin and wished to marry her. Khosrow agrēd to let the union happen only if Farhād could carve a channel of milk through a mountain. As Farhād undertōk the nearly impossible task and was about to complete his mission, Khosrow sent forth the false news of Shirin’s death. Unable to bear this heart rending news, Farhād brought his life to a tragic end by jumping from a mountain top. There have been several variations on Farhād’s story with many portraying him as an army commander. Some versions even state that Shirin had fallen in love with Farhād despite the class difference and it was her father who set the condition to carve the mountain. His influence is not restricted to just literature but expands to fine arts and folklore in many languages and cultures.
