Roza-e-Rawadari and Syncretic Culture of India | |||
This is the first Ramadan after the death of our beloved poet and representative of Ganga-Jamuni Tahzeeb, Janab Gulzar Dehlavi. Every year he used to observe one fast – usually on the last Friday of the month, to strengthen the common cultural values. He called it “Roza-e-Rawadari.” To break his fast, his friends used to organize a lavish Iftar party. Gulzar Sahib said that he had started observing this special fast on the instructions of Maulana Ahmad Saeed, which he later made a part of his moral and cultural values. | |||

One day, after Ramadan was over, King Bahadur Shah Zafar asked Mirza Ghalib, “Mirza, kitne rozey rakhey?” “Mirza replied, Pir-o-Murshid, ek nahi rakha.” Mirza’s answer was very interesting. He apparently told the king that he did not observe one. On the other hand, the real aspect was that he did not observe a single fast. |
