ناقوس nāqūs v.n. fr. نقس 'to strike a gong,' c.

A ناقوس nāqūs (v.n. fr. نقس 'to strike (a gong),' &c.), s.m. A kind of wooden gong; a thin oblong piece of wood, suspended by two strings and struck with a flexible rod (used by the Eastern Christians to summon the congregation to divine service, church bells not being allowed in Muhammadan countries);—a kind of shell blown by Hindūs in divine worship (i.q. śankh).

A ناقص nāqiṣ (act. part. of نقص 'to be defective,' &c.), adj. Defective, imperfect, deficient, wanting (in); unfinished, incomplete; mutilated; unsound, bad, vicious, worthless;—inexpert:—nāqiṣuʼl-ʻaql, or nāqiṣ-ʻaql, adj. Deficient in understanding or judgment; of unsound mind; foolish, ignorant, silly, stupid:—nāqiṣ karnā, v.t. To render defective; to vitiate; to mutilate:—nāqiṣ honā or ho-jānā, v.n. To be or become defective, or deficient, &c.; to be vitiated; to deteriorate; to want, to fail.
