"منطق الطیر" شیخ فرید الدین عطار کی فارسی زبان میں لکھی ہوئی مثنوی ہے جو چار ہزار چھ سو اشعار پر مشتمل ہے۔ یہ مثنوی اپنے حصے ہفت وادی کی وجہ سے سماوی سفر ناموں کی اہم کتب میں شمار ہوتی ہے۔ ہفت وادی،میں ایک مشکل سفر کا بیان جو سات وادیوں سے گزرنے کا بے حد مشکل عمل ہے۔ یہ سات وادیاں، طلب و جستجو، عشق، معرفت، استغنا، توحید، حیرت اور فنا کے نام سے مسموم ہیں۔ تیش پرندے جب ہدہد کی رہنمائی میں یہ ساتوں وادیاں عبور کر لیتے ہیں تو انہیں وادی فنا میں سیمرغ کی بارگاہ دکھائی دیتی ہے لیکن جب وہ سیمرغ کو دیکھتے ہیں تو انہیں اس میں اور اپنے میں کوئی فرق دکھائی نہیں دیتا۔ گویا وہ تیس پرندے علاماتی طور پر اپنی تلاش میں چلے تھے اور اپنی یافت پر ان کا سفر ختم ہوتا ہے۔ اس مثنوی کو ادب کے علاوہ تصوف و معرفت میں بڑا مقام حاصل ہے۔

"Rumi famously quoted, “150 years after the crucifying of Mansoor Hallaj, the spiritual radiance of the former rekindled in the birth of Sheikh Fariduddin Attar.” Attar used to sell medicines and perfumes in the early stages of his life. One day a dervish chanced upon his shop, Attar had such an impression of the Darvesh that he shut his shop then and there and became a dervish himself. Later, Attar would also go on to meet Rumi. Attar wrote about 114 books, out of which only 30 have been found. Due to his liberal and progressive views, Attar also had to face a lot of troubles, his house was looted and was even thrown out. According to some legends, it was the army of Genghis Khan which slayed Attar.
