in 1903, the monthly magazine "zamana" was launched from bareilly under the editorship of shiv barath lal verman. later, diya narayan nigam took over as editor, and the magazine began publishing from kanpur. "zamana" was known for its high-quality literary articles and covered a wide range of subjects. according to the index compiled by dr. shafi ahmad usmani, there was hardly any topic that zamana did not cover. its subjects included philosophy, religion, social sciences, linguistics, science, applied sciences, fine arts, literature, history, geography, travelogues, and biographies. additionally, it featured valuable writings on the urdu language, particularly on the urdu-hindi language dispute. for those who claim that literary magazines do not publish scientific articles, zamana serves as a strong rebuttal. it featured articles on mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, mineralogy, geology, anthropology, botany, and various other scientific disciplines, proving its remarkable diversity and intellectual depth.
