A قانون qānūn (P. also qānūn; akin to Gr. κανὼν), s.m. A canon, rule, regulation, law, legislative act, statute, ordinance;—a species of dulcimer or harp:—qānūn-dān, s.m. One who is versed or learned in the law, a lawyer, jurist:—qānūn-dānī, s.f. Knowledge of the law;—jurisprudence:—qānūn-ě-dīwānī, s.m. Civil law:—qānūn-ě-faujdārī, s.m. Criminal law:—qānūn-go, s.m. An officer in each district, acquainted with its customs, the nature of the tenure of the lands, &c.; registrar of a pargana, or the hereditary registrar of landed property in a pargana; a superintendent of village accountants:—qānūn-goʼī, s.f.
