A علي ʻalī (v.n. fr. علو 'to be high,' &c.), adj. High (in rank, &c.), eminent, noble;—s.m. The name of Moḥammad's son-in-law (he was, according to the Sunnī sect, the fourth Khalīfa or successor of Moḥammad; but the Shīʻas make him the direct successor, not acknowledging the three other Caliphs); a proper name:—ʻalī-band, s.m. ʻAlī's tie'; an amulet or charm (against sorceries or enchantments); an ornament, a jewel:—ʻalī-dhat, adj. (colloq.) Gigantic, monstrous:—ʻalī-kī kamān, 'The bow of ʻAlī,' the rainbow:—ʻalī-madad, s.f. 'Alī's help'; a return salutation;—name of a trick in wrestling.
