الله allāh i.e. al ilāh, 'the God,' by way of eminence
A الله allāh (i.e. al ilāh, 'the God,' by way of eminence), s.m. God, the Supreme Being;—intj. O God! Have mercy!:—allāhǒ akbar, God is great (an introductory ejaculation used in prayer, and also when slaughtering an animal; and an exclamation of surprise, wonder, resignation, &c.: it is called the takbīr):—allāh allāh, intj. (expressive of surprise, approbation, &c.), Good God! good gracious! wonderful! extraordinary! excellent! thank God!:—allāh allāh karnā, To call on God; to say (one's) prayers, count (one's) beads:—allāh āmīn, intj. God grant it be so! So be it! Heaven protect him;—adv. With prayer and fasting, &c.; with great care, anxiously;—allāh āmīn-kā laṛkā, A child granted after many prayers:—allāh-belī (for allāh-wālī), intj. God preserve you! God speed! Adieu!:—allāh-pīr manānā, To propitiate God and the saints (by offerings, &c.); to make a religious vow:—allāh rakkho, intj. God keep (him or her)!:—allāh re, O God! Good God!:—allāh-kā nām, The name of God;—nothing whatever, not a rap:—allāh-kā nām lenā, To take the name of God, to have the fear of God (in one,—said to one who tells a lie, e.g. allāh-kā nām lo!):—allāh-kā nūr, lit. 'The light of God'; a gift from God (as a beard, &c); a very beautiful person; (ironically) a hideously ugly person; a very wicked person:—illāh-kā bāʼolā, An innocent, a demented person, lunatic; simpleton, fool:—allāh-kī jān, The soul; life; the animal kingdom;—a poor fellow, poor creature:—allāh-ke log, allāh-log, s.m. God's people, holy men, good men; mendicants; careless or thoughtless persons;—simple-minded people, guileless people:—allāh-mārī, s.f. lit. 'One stricken by God'; A God-forsaken wife; a gadding wife; an unchaste woman, a harlot:—allāh mīʼāṅ, s.m. God, the Supreme Lord:—allāh mīʼāṅ-kī gāʼe, s.f. An artless, simple-minded person; a simpleton;—a snail (Helix):—allāh nigahbān, intj.=allāh-belī, q.v.:—allāh-hī allāh, intj. O God! God alone is stable and sure! Good God! (an ejaculation expressing surprise, &c.=allāh re);—a salutation among faqīrs.
