MORE BYAnisur Rahman

The first Urdu poet with a complete divan to his credit, Quli Qutub Shah (1565-1611) is known to be a great lover. He has written poems in praise of his twelve beloveds whom he named individually in his poetry. One of them, and the most prominent of them all, was a lady called Bhagmati. The legend has it that Quli Qutub Shah founded a city called Bhag Nagar after her. This city was later named Hyderabad, once Bhagmati came to be re-named as Hyder Mahal.
