MORE BYAnisur Rahman

Hatim Tai, a native of Yemen, is known as one of the most bountiful and generous human beings on this earth. His reputation as a munificent and kind man had travelled far and wide. People from Yemen and even from outside used to come to him and get their share of his generosity.

A man called Naufil was the king of Arabia during those days. When he came to know about Hatim’s generosity, he got worried that he would soon overshadow him and would become more popular than him. So, when his worry exceeded all limits, he planned something nefarious and sent one of his men to kill him. This man planned to commit this crime in the late night when Hatim was deep in sleep. Thus, he sneaked into his bedroom when he was asleep and just as he lifted his sword; Hatim changed his side and woke up to see this man with a sword in hand ready to kill him. The man got terrified as he had been caught red-handed. He was terrified and feared that he would be killed by Hatim’s men. Hatim asked him the reason why he wanted to kill him. He confessed that he was sent by Naufil to kill him and earn a good amount in turn. The man beseeched Hatim for his forgiveness. Hatim forgave him and said that if he was doing such a crime for money, he would get enough of that even without doing this. The man felt ashamed for the crime he was going to commit. Hatim offered him a bag of asharfis as he had told him a while ago and bid him farewell.

There is yet another story that tells of his magnanimity. This is the story of a person who wanted to get his grand horse as a gift from him. This person arrived at Hatim’s place in the evening and stayed with him for the night. Hatim wanted to give him a sumptuous dinner. So, he asked his cook to make preparations for the same. The cook said that there was no meat available in the house to serve that night. He, then, asked him to sacrifice his most dear horse and prepare the dinner. The cook followed his master’s instruction. Next morning, when the guest was about to leave, he expressed his desire to own his horse which had enamoured him immensely. Hatim felt extremely sorry and said that it was no longer possible as the horse had already been sacrificed to prepare a good meal for him. The guest felt very embarrassed and expressed his regrets. Hatim, however, did not disappoint him and offered him asharfis before he left.

Hatim is also known for spreading his words of wisdom: that the human beings are already destined to get their sustenance from God, that it is only on the human beings to repay what they owe to God for all His blessings, that death is the ultimate reality, and that God alone has the ultimate knowledge of everything on the earth and in the skies.
