Isa (Jesus)

MORE BYAnisur Rahman

Isa, also known as Jesus in the Biblical narrative, was the penultimate Prophet and the son of Maryam (Mary). He was miraculously born to Maryam, a virgin. He is a significant figure in Islam with the the Quran mentioning him ninety-three times in various chapters. It is said that Isa was endowed with the divine power to speak even when he was nine months old. During his childhood in Egypt, he performed many miracles such as filling empty jars and identifying the wrongdoers etc. Later, he could also make the leper walk, heal the blind, and blow life into a clay bird. Like all Prophets, he was also assigned the mission of spreading the word of One God. Subsequently, he began his preaching in Kufa which falls in the present-day Iraq. While the Biblical version claims that Isa was the Son of God, the Quran states that Isa was God’s messenger and was a mortal. The Quran also differs from the Bible on the issue of his crucifixion and resurrection. Islam claims that he was sent to fulfil a purpose assigned by God and once his purpose was over, God raised him to the heavens. The Quran also dispels the notion that Isa died for the sins of humanity. Both religions, however, agree that Isa’s second coming would be a crusade against the false messiah on the Day of Judgement.
