Khizr

MORE BYAnisur Rahman

Khizr is known as the spiritual guide of Musa (Moses) and Sikandar (Alexander). While many say that he was a Prophet, some others argue that he was one of the angels sent upon the earth to guide those who had lost their way. There are many stories around him suggesting that he drank from the Water of Life and attained immortality. The most popular story around him is the one in which he met Musa. God had told him about Khizr who knew more than him. In order to meet Khizr, Musa was instructed to carry a cooked fish and look for him at the meeting of two rivers. He was further told that it would be precisely there that the fish would acquire life and run away. Finally, when Musa and Khizr met at that place, Khizr instructed Musa not to put any question, or seek any answer. Khizr, then, went on to kill a boy, mend a wall, and cause a defect in a ship. All this perplexed Musa and he implored him to tell the reasons why he did this. Khizr broke the agreement of not giving an answer and explained to Musa that the boy was an evil so he needed to be killed, the wall contained treasures for the orphan boys so it needed to be mended, and the ship was inauspicious for the King so a defect had to be created in it so that he did not use it. These explained the powers that Khizr had at his command. So, he rightly worked as a pathfinder to those who had lost their ways and also those who needed spiritual guidance.
