Majnoon (Qais) and Laila

Majnoon is one half of the famous star-crossed lovers known as Laila-Majnoon. Their story comes to us from the 11th century Arabia. Although the story was known in Persia, it was the eminent poet Nizami Ganjavi who gave it a legendary status in the twelfth century. Born as Qais Ibn al-Mulawwah, he fell in love with Laila at a young age. He began composing poems for her. There was so much of passion in his poetry that people branded him a majnoon--the possessed one. When he finally managed to ask her father for Laila’s hand, her father refused. He thought that it would be scandalous to give his daughter to someone who was considered crazy. So, Laila was married to an older man called Ward al-thaqafi against her will. Hearing this, Majnoonn left home and stayed in the wilderness with animals for his company. When Laila’s husband died, she wished to be reunited with Majnoon but she was asked to be in a state of grief for two years. Laila died in the meanwhile and Majnoon, already devastated by the death of his parents, could not take this terrible setback of Laila’s passing away. He went to her grave and breathed his last there only.
