MORE BYAnisur Rahman

Taalut and Jaalut, also known as Saul and Goliath in the Biblical narrative, are known to be face-to-face in a fight that underlines the victory of faith and steadfastness against pride and prejudice. Jaalut was a brutal king who oppressed the Israelites. So, the Israelites prayed to God for their release from Jaalut’s oppression. God answered their prayer and made way for Taalut to rescue them from Jaalut. Taluut was an ordinary man with no experience in statecraft, warfare, or administration. What went in his favour, however, was that he was very strong and an extremely intelligent young man. He took it as a duty towards his people to challenge Jaluut who was mightier than many and cunning than most. In order to wage a war with Jaalut who had a massive army, he first prepared a sound strategy and tested the strength and efficiency, as well as sincerity and commitment of his people who could take part in the battle against Jaalut. He tested his men on the riverside and said that those who would drink from the river would not be a part of his entourage but only those who would drink from the cup of a hand would accompany him to the battlefield. Many failed this difficult test. Hence, Taalut fared forward with a small army of 313 to face a huge army of lacs. When they reached the battlefield, Jaalut asked Taalut for a person who could be sent to face him first. Taalut reflected for a while and sought advice from his men and decided to send Dawood (David) to face him. Dawood was young but had full faith in God and was, in addition, well trained in the art of slinging. He fared forward and used his art of slinging a stone with great expertise. The stone hit Jaalut and turned him incapable of going ahead with the battle. Following this, the battle became easy for the army of Taalut and they won it which proved the victory of good against evil. Quran mentions this victory (Sura 2) with a message for the humanity.
