Profile of Shah Waliullah Mohaddis Delhvi

Real Name : Qutubuddin Ahmad

Born : 21 Feb 1703 | Muzaffarnagar, Uttar pradesh

Died : 20 Aug 1762 | Delhi, India

Identity: A great Muhaddith, Qur’anic exegete, jurist, Mujaddid of the Ummah, and one of the most eminent Islamic thinkers of the Indian subcontinent

Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlawi is counted among the most distinguished Islamic scholars of the subcontinent who laid the foundations of a powerful religious and intellectual revival based on the Qur’an, Hadith, and Islamic jurisprudence at a time of Muslim decline. He is remembered with honorific titles such as Hakim al-Ummah and Mujaddid al-Millat.

He was born in Shawwal 1114 AH (February 1703 CE) in Phulat, Muzaffarnagar district (India). His father, Shah Abdur Rahim, was a renowned scholar, Sufi, contributor to Fatawa-e-Alamgiri, and the founder of Madrasah Rahimiyyah. Shah Waliullah received his early education and training under his father’s supervision. From a young age, he attained mastery in the Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh, logic, and Arabic and Persian sciences, and assumed teaching responsibilities at an early age.

After his father’s demise, he assumed the teaching chair of Madrasah Rahimiyyah at the age of seventeen and remained engaged in teaching religious and rational sciences for twelve years. His life was a practical embodiment of discipline, hard work, devotion, authorship, and reform of the Muslim community.

His greatest contribution lies in the understanding and dissemination of the Qur’an. He translated the Qur’an into Persian under the title “Fath al-Rahman” to make the divine message accessible to common people. His renowned work Al-Fawz al-Kabir fi Usul al-Tafsir remains a foundational text in Qur’anic studies.

In Hadith, jurisprudence, and Sufism, he adopted a balanced and research-oriented approach. Rather than blind imitation, he conducted a comparative study of the legal schools in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah, adopting what he found closest to authentic tradition. His masterpiece Hujjatullah al-Balighah stands as a milestone in the history of Islamic thought.

Politically and socially as well, he was a keen observer of his time. He closely analyzed Muslim decline, economic inequality, and intellectual stagnation, and presented a Qur’an-based model for societal reform.

His four sons—Shah Abdul Aziz, Shah Rafiuddin, Shah Abdul Qadir, and Shah Abdul Ghani—emerged as leading scholars of their era and carried forward his intellectual and reformist legacy.

Death: Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlawi passed away on 29 Muharram 1176 AH / 20 August 1762 CE in Delhi and was laid to rest in the Mehndiyan cemetery, known as the graveyard of the Muhaddithin.
