Hazrat Al-Hajj Maulana Professor Abid Hasan Faridi (M.A. L.T.-M.R.A.S.) was born in the village of Bachchraon in the district of Moradabad, U.P., India. His father, Ahmad Hasan, practised law in Rampur and was well-known as a great Alim and Muhaddith. His elder brother was the great scholar Maulana Professor Hamid Hasan Qadiri. Their lineage can be traced back to the 12th century Sufi saint, Hazrat Baba Farid Uddin Mas’ood Chishtie Gunjshakar of Pak Pattan, Pakistan. The family had a reputation of being a religious and scholarly family.

Professor Abid Hasan Faridi, was born on 17th Muharram 1307 A.H. which relates to 24th September 1889.  His early education was in the local Madrassa but he passed the Inter examination from Rampur State High School, his family having moved there. He enrolled at the Mohammaden Anglo-Oriental (M.A.O.) College in Aligarh to pursue his higher education. He passed the final examinations of his B.A. in 1913; and a year later attained an L.T. degree from Allahabad University.

After receiving his qualification, Faridi Sahab started his teaching career as Third Master at the Islamia High School in Itawa. In 1917, he accepted the position of Headmaster at the Haleem Muslim High School in Kanpur. Faridi Sahab studied for an M.A. in Farsi , whilst teaching in Itawa and Kanpur, graduating in 1918.

At the start of the 1920 academic year, Faridi Sahab joined the prestigious St John’s College in Agra as a professor of Farsi and Head of Department. He remained at the college until his untimely death in 1945.

Ameer Millat Hazrat Peer Syed Jamat Ali Shah Sahab, was a renowned Sufi saint of the Naqshbandiyya sufi order. Whilst visiting Agra, in November 1924, he initiated Faridi Sahab into Silsila Aliya Naqshbandi Jamati. Six years later, when Faridi Sahab was in Alipur, on the 30th December 1930,  he was given the Khilafat of the Halaqah in Agra.

Faridi Sahab was a very religious person, bestowed with a deep sense of spirituality. However, this was not apparent due to his humble nature. His temperament was light hearted and witty; being an amenable and generous host. He was gentle with children, never displaying his irritation.

Faridi Sahab dedicated his life to education, with a career spanning over 30 years. He was very popular with all his students due to his generous character and compassionate nature. He was not only interested in the education of his students but also in the development of their character.

Abid Hasan Faridi passed away on 17th May 1945 which is 4th Jamad Al-Akhir 1364 A.H. He is buried at Sayyidna Cemetery, in Agra. An Urs takes place annually on the 17th May at his mazar and continues to the present day.  Faridi Sahab was blessed with 6 children: 2 daughters and 4 sons.
