Prominent modernist poet and a celebrated scholar of Persian, Munibur Rahman was born on 18 July, 1924 at Agra. He acquired his degrees of M. A. in Persian and History from Aligarh Muslim University and his Ph. D. in Persian literature from London University. Following this, he worked as a Persian faculty at Aligarh. In 1970, he went to America and worked at Auckland University’s department of languages. Munibur Rahamn was deeply interested in the classical literature of Persian and the modernist voices of Persian poetry. While in Iran, he studied modern Persian literature in greater depth. This led to the publication of his book on modern Persian poetry both in Urdu and English. His books of Urdu poetry that bear his individual modernist mark include Baazdeed, Shahr-e-Gumnaam, and Nuqta-i-Mauhoom.
