About The Author

Mohammad Miir, whose poetic surname was Soz, was born in Delhi. Syed Ziauddin was his father. Soz was a skillful archer and was adept in horsemanship and the use of various arms. He was also a noted calligrapher. Later he became a religious mendicant, entered in to the path of spiritual liberty and seeing the devastated condition of Delhi left for Lucknow. Soz originally adopted Miir as his takhallus but when Miir Taqii Miir became famous under that poetical surname he changed it to Soz. He himself introduced both these nom de plumes in one of his couplets. He has left an Urdu diwan comprising ghazals, masnavis, quatrains and mukhammas. He is noted as a writer of ghazals full of directness, simplicity and pathos. He was also famous as a reciter of verses and his mode of recitation was considerably imitated in his days.
