Born March 1,1970, in Nigina to a distinguished, learned family, Nusrat Mehdi received her early education in her birthplace, eventually graduating from Meerut University. With an MA in three languages Urdu, Hindi and English, she has also been awarded an honorary doctorate by Ashcroft University, London (UK). She is currently the Director, Rajya Anand Sansthan, Department of Spirituality, Government of Madhya Pradesh and resides in Bhopal.
Many a great woman have been the flag-bearers of Urdu literature for a long time, but at the end of the twentieth century several poetesses made the scene who not only embodied feminine sentiments in their poetry but also their own. And Dr. Mehdi, too, has encompassed all these attributes in all her works. That’s why, her works have always been among the treasured selections of the true connoisseurs of Urdu literature.
Dr. Nusrat Mehdi has been the Secretary of Madhya Pradesh Urdu Academy for a long time. She enhanced the prestige of the academy with her astute managerial skills. For many years, Urdu Week was celebrated through which she did many works in the field of fine arts which helped in popularizing language and literature. Additionally, she held several important positions including former Deputy Director, Allama Iqbal Literary Center, Department of Culture, Madhya Pradesh, National Council for the Promotion of Urdu Language, Former Member of the Executive Board of New Delhi, National Book Trust Former members of the Advisory Council of India, CCRT Ministry of Culture, Member of the Urdu Panel of Delhi, Former Chief Executive Officer, Madhya Pradesh Waqf Board, Former Executive Officer, State Hajj Committee.
In her poetry, Dr. Mehdi has molded the bitterness, anarchy, and protest of the society into an animate sculpture. In her harmonious verses, even the bitterest of truths come are expressed in the sweetest tone. What impresses the listener or the reader in her writings is the motif as well as the colorfulness of the words. Besides poetry, she also writes stories, articles, drama scripts, etc. And, has been actively and continuously involved in international seminars, Urdu conventions, workshops, consultations, having traveled to the United States, England, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Muscat and other countries.
Her works of poetry include, Saya Saya Dhuup, Abla-Paa, Main Bhi To Hun (Devanagari), Ghar Aane Ko Hai, Hisar-e-Zaat Se Pare, and Farhad Nahin Hone Ke (Devanagari).
Her prose works are, 1857 Ki Jang-e-Azadi, and Intikhab-e-Sukhan.
She has been awarded many honors and awards at national and international level, including "International Performance International Award" by Urdu Center International Los Angeles, California, USA on 10 February 2018 through International Social Development Foundation. The Most Promising Poets and Writers in India Award, from the International Chamber of Media and Entertainment Industry and the Asian Academy of Arts. Sumran Geet Aizaz 2017, from the Cultural Society, Sumran Sahtik Sanstha, Bhopal. Abhno Shabad Shalpi 2017, from the Abhnav Kala Parishad, Bhopal. Surjan Kala Prerak Aizaz 2016, Lok Kala Mandal, Udepura. Akhtar-ul-Iman Award 2016, by Iqbal Memorial Education Society, Nigina, Uttar Pradesh. Mother Teresa Gold Medal 2015, Best Citizen of India Gold Medal, 2015, Parveen Shakir 2014 Award by Amravati Municipal Corporation, Maharashtra, Mazhar Saeed Khan Award 2014, Amr Shaheed Ashfaqullah award, 2010, Bhopal. "Nushuur Award" 2008, from Bazm-e-Nushur, Kanpur Khatun Oudh Award 2006, Lucknow etc. are notable.
