Poet, fiction writer, satirist, lexicographer, fiction writer, critic, researcher, scholar and musicologist Prof. Dr. Shafaq Sopori was born in a respectable family of Sopore, a famous town of Kashmir (India). Shafaq Sopori did his matriculation from Middle School Takiabal Sopore, matriculation from Higher Secondary School Sopore and obtained his BA degree from Degree College Sopore with subjects of Arabic, English and Urdu. Later, Shafaq Sopori received the degrees of Master of Arts, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy from the Department of Urdu, University of Kashmir.

Shafaq Sopori started his career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Higher Education, Jammu and Kashmir. He became a professor by setting different stages of development. He was made Principal by the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission but he did not accept this responsibility due to literary engagements. He superannuated from Cluster University, Srinagar. Being inclined towards poetry and music, Shafaq Sopori took leave from the university for six years to do a diploma in Hindustani classical music and wrote his PhD thesis on "Elements of Indian Music in Urdu Poetry." In this way he became the first scholar to work on the subject. The study and research of poetry and music is a special field of Shafaq Sopori and so far no one else is an expert in this subject. Apart from this, he has also interpreted the verses of many classical verses  in which the terms of music have been used. 
Shafaq Sopori is also an expert of prosody. He has also made significant contributions in this field. These are his two books:

In addition, he has critically reviewed the work of many important poets. Prominent among them are Mir Taqi Mir, Iqbal, Hasrat Mohani, Wali Dikni, Siraj Aurangabadi and Sauda.

Shafaq Sopori is a prominent poet of his era. His poetry got published for a long time in the famous periodical "Shabkhoon." Shafaq has experimented with almost every genre of poetry. But the ghazal is his special field. There is clarity in his thoughts and expressions. His poetry has been appreciated by a prominent critics of Urdu. Below is a selection of his poetry:

Shafaq Sopori is also an important  fiction writer of his time. He started writing fiction in 2016. His first novel Neelma is the first Urdu novel written on the down trodden section of Indian society ADIVASI. This was followed by his novel "Firing Range Kashmir 1990" in 2019. This is the first novel written on the situation in Kashmir. The subject of his novel "Qalandar Khan" is also related to the era of Kashmir in which militancy was at its peak. He also has a collection of short stories "Rag Ragini aur Vrajit Sour" on the same subject.  The theme of his novel “ Dariya hai chashm e giryanak "is the political scenario of Jammu and Kashmir of the 1947 riots.

Shafaq Sopori is an acclaimed satirist and humorist. His book "Shaguftane" was included in the syllabus by the University of Kashmir.

Shafaq Sopori is also a critic. His book "Jahat" contains critical essays. Shafaq worked in a senior position in the Academy of Art and Culture Languages (Jammu and Kashmir) for three years, compiling an index of the "Shirazah" magazine coming out of there and also released a newsletter that had been closed for two decades.

In recognition of Shafaq Sopori's scholarly and literary contributions, he has been honored by the State Cultural Academy. Apart from this, M. Phil and Ph. D. have been done in many universities of India on his life and literary achievements. Hyderabad Central University, Delhi University and Jammu University are notable among them.
