Syed Fazlul Hasan was born on 14 February 1914 in Dera Ghazi Khan. He had studied only till tenth class in school, but learnt Persian and Urdu privately. He went on to memorize many couplets that helped him in poetry. His father’s pension was the only source of running his household. His mother earned some money by doing embroidery work. During this stage of his life, he fell seriously ill, which lasted for a period of twelve years. When he became well, he took up the job of a peon in the municipal committee. From there he was promoted to the post of a record keeper in the same department. Three years prior to his official retirement date, he took voluntary retirement. He began to write poetry in 1933, at the age of eighteen, under the pen name of Shafqat and became Shafqat Kazmi. Initially, he became the disciple of Nadeem Jaffery of Dera Ghazi Khan. Later, he sought the literary guidance of Hasrat Mohani. He was continuously bearing with health related issues. He died on 12 March 1975. Naghma-e-Naaheed, Hasrat Kadah, Naghma-e-Hasrat, Daagh-e-Hasrat and Zakhm-e-Hasrat are collections of his poetry.
