Safdar Hamdani was born on November 17, 1950 in Lahore to a learned and literary family. His father, Mustafa Ali Hamdani, was a prominent broadcaster who announced the independence of Pakistan on the night of August 13-14 on Lahore Radio. Safdar Hamdani received his early education in Lahore and also graduated from FC College, Lahore. After that he did M.Sc. in Journalism from Punjab University. n 1973, he joined Radio Pakistan as a producer. During his service he also served in the Radio Academy and overseas in Radio Poland and Radio Japan for four years. Since he relocating in UK in 1992, he has been associated with BBC Urdu for almost twenty years. He has been living in Surrey, UK for the last three decades and from there he launched Al-Qamar Online for the first four years and then in 2008 an e-newspaper called Aalami Akhbar.
Along with broadcasting, Safdar also continued his writing, and wrote several ghazals, Nazms, naats, manqabats and elegies. Owning to his distinct Marsiyas, he has been conferred the title of Aal-‘Abba. He has traveled to Europe, the United States, and many countries in the Middle East to recite his elegies.
His works include, Kafan Pe Tahreeren (1974), Furat Ke Ansuu (2003), Noor-e-Karbala (2003), Mo’jiza-e-Qalam (2004), Kulliyat-e-Hussain (2005), Tehran Ho gar Aalam-e-Mashriq Ka Geneva (2006), and many more.
Miss Misbah-e-Azam, a student of MARB Ed Final from Educational University Lahore in 2012, has succeeded in writing a research thesis in the form of a book on Mr. Hamdani's “Marsiya-Nigari”. Syeda Samar Jafari has successfully completed her M.Phil dissertation in the session 2016-2018 on Safdar Hamdani's literary services from Government College University Lahore. Yida Samar Jafari is a teacher of Urdu literature and for this M.Phil dissertation she did research and editing for about two years. For this article, his supervisor was well-known writer, researcher and moderator, Dr. Muhammad Haroon Qadir, who guided Samar Jafari at every step. Zeeshan Zaidi, a UK based researcher, has written about Safdar Hamdani in a research paper. Safdar Hamdani has travelled around the globe for his poetic recitations and Mushaira performances.
