Kalkatta: Ek Rubaab, a long poem by Hurmat-ul-Ikram, became so popular that it ultimately became the source of his essential identity. This poem is a testimony to his love for this unique city and opens up a new way to look at this space of multiple identities. He also wrote many other poems and a good number of ghazals.
Hurmat-ul-Ikram was named Syed Ansar Hussain at his birth and belonged to Azamgarh but he was born in Mirzapur on 02 December, 1928. He spent the major portion of his life in Calcutta which accounts for how this city breathes so well in his poetry. His collections of poems include Ujaalon ke Geet, Shahper, Jalwa-i-Numoo, and Shaakh-e-Aagahi. He died on 04 January, 1983.
