Ali Abbas Bekhud has been a familiar name of modern Urdu ghazal. He was named Ali Abbas khan at his birth on 02 July, 1906. He got his degrees of M. A. in Urdu and Persian from Calcutta University. In 1933, he joined the Anglo-Persian department of Madrasa Alia in Calcutta as a faculty but left it to join Islamia College, now known as Maulana Azad College in Calcutta, as an Urdu faculty in 1935. He retired from there as the head of the combined departments of Urdu, Persian, and Arabic.
Bekhud represents the classical tone and tenor of Urdu-Persian ghazal. His nazm also represents the same strain. Being aware of other literary traditions as well, his poetry developed a comprehensive view of life and letters. His poems were put together in an anthology called Jaam-e-Bekhudi. He passed away on 06 August, 1969.
