Mohan Singh Oberoi Deewana was born in 1899 at Rawalpindi. He got his degrees of M. A. from Punjab University and of D. Litt. from Calcutta University on his thesis on new trends in modern Urdu poetry. Later, he also got another degree from Punjab University and wrote a detailed history of Punjabi literature. He taught English and Punjabi for a long period at Oriental College, Lahore. He migrated to Pakistan after the Partition of India.
Deewana wrote his poetry in both the languages—Urdu and Punjabi. In his Urdu poetry, he added words from the Punjabi language which added a new flavour to Urdu and became a cause for his individual popularity. He included his nazms and ghazals in his collection entitled Safeena.
He died in 1984.
