Raunaq Naim is well known among the Progressive poets. He did not only subscribe to the ideology of the Movement and wrote accordingly, but also worked as an activist. He was born in 1933 at a place called Seodi in West Bengal. While his father was a Bangla poet, his uncles composed poetry in Urdu. At the beginning of his career as a poet, he sought counseling on his poetry from his uncles. As he grew in years, he responded sensitively to the socio-political conditions of his time and came unto his own to write his own kind of poetry deeply inspired by a political ideology. He published his poetry regularly in Shahraah, an organ of the Progressive Writers Movement and Sajjad Zaheer’s weekly Awaami Daur. Some of his poetry collections are: Daira dar Daira, Paani Behtaa Jai, Samundar Bolta Hai, and Udaas Jungle.
