the monthly magazine shabkhoon, published from allahabad in june 1966, was a pioneering journal of modernism. initially, the name of dr. syed ijaz hussain, a progressive writer and critic, appeared on the magazine as its first editor. later, jamila farooqi and aqila shaheen were also included as editors. the names of mahmood hashmi and saqi farooqi were also published as editors at different times. from issue number 51 onwards, shamsur rahman faruqi's name appeared in the journal in connection with editing and refinement, and it remained there until the final issue. through this magazine, faruqi played a crucial role in promoting and propagating modernism, shaping its trends and attitudes. shabkhoon brought together a large caravan of writers who aligned themselves with modernism. the contributions of shabkhoon to literary journalism are profound and unforgettable. even its opponents acknowledged its scholarly and literary significance. the subjects and debates featured in shabkhoon introduced new waves of intellectual excitement in urdu literature, opening doors to fresh discussions. undoubtedly, shabkhoon was a historic magazine, and its contents continue to serve as a guiding light for writers today.
