jā-e-mai apne ko khīñchā chāhiye
the company of drunks eschew
in bars let wine not near you
chāhne ko tere kyā samjhā thā dil
baare ab is se bhī samjhā chāhiye
it thought was easy loving you
this with my heart I must pursue
chaak mat kar jaib be-ayyām-e-gul
kuchh udhar kā bhī ishārā chāhiye
rend not your clothes till spring is here
a signal from there should appear
dostī kā parda hai begānagī
muñh chhupānā ham se chhoḌā chāhiye
for love, indifference is a guise
stop hiding from me I'd advise
dushmanī ne merī khoyā ġhair ko
kis qadar dushman hai dekhā chāhiye
it cost him all, my enmity
behold my foe's hostility
apnī rusvā.ī meñ kyā chaltī hai sa.ī
yaar hī hañgāma-ārā chāhiye
in vain efforts at self-disgrace
do need a stormy sweetheart's face
munhasir marne pe ho jis kī umiid
nā-umīdī us kī dekhā chāhiye
whose hopes depend on death merely
his despondency you should see
ġhāfil in mah-tal.atoñ ke vāste
chāhne vaalā bhī achchhā chāhiye
you seek these beauties company
the mirror first you need to see
chāhte haiñ ḳhūb-rūyoñ ko 'asad'
aap kī sūrat to dekhā chāhiye
these moon-faced beauties, be aware
seek lovers good-looking and fair
