tohmat-e-chand apne zimme dhar chale
jis liye aa.e the so ham kar chale
I leave, taking 'pon myself, accusation, blame
I depart as I've fulfilled, that for which I came
zindagī hai yā koī tūfān hai
ham to is jiine ke hāthoñ mar chale
is it life or else is it / a tempest of some kind?
to dying, at this life's behest, I have been consigned
kyā hameñ kaam in guloñ se ai sabā
ek dam aa.e idhar ūdhar chale

dosto dekhā tamāshā yaañ kā sab
tum raho ḳhush ham to apne ghar chale
everybody's spectacle, friends I've seen / and so
you stay happy and content, to my abode I go
aah bas mat jī jalā tab jāniye
jab koī afsūñ tirā us par chale
O my sigh! scorch not mine heart, to you I shall defer
when a spell of yours, somehow, has an effect on her
ek maiñ dil-resh huuñ vaisā hī dost
zaḳhm kitnoñ ke sunā hai bhar chale
I am one whose wounded heart / is just the same my friend
I have heard so many others' / wounds are on the mend
sham.a ke mānind ham is bazm meñ
chashm-tar aa.e the dāman-e-tar chale

DhūñDhte haiñ aap se us ko pare
shaiḳh sāhab chhoḌ ghar bāhar chale
from his inner self away, he seeks for Him elsewhere
from his home, the Sheikh departs / to venture here and there
ham na jaane paa.e bāhar aap se
vo hī aaḌe aa gayā jīdhar chale

ham jahāñ meñ aa.e the tanhā vale
saath apne ab use le kar chale
I had come into this world, all alone, although
taking Him, now by my side, forward I will go
juuñ sharar ai hastī-e-be-būd yaañ
baare ham bhī apnī baarī bhar chale

sāqiyā yaañ lag rahā hai chal-chalāv
jab talak bas chal sake sāġhar chale
Saqi it appears that here, all are set to go
as long you can influence, do let the liquor flow
'dard' kuchh ma.alūm hai ye log sab
kis taraf se aa.e the kīdhar chale
'dard', about these people, is there aught you know?
where is it they come from / and whereto do they go?
