A حد ḥadd, vulg. ḥad (inf. n. fr. حدّ 'to prevent,' &c.), s.f. Boundary, term, limit, bounds, extreme, extremity, extent;—bar, obstruction, impediment, separation;—a definition;—the point, or verge (of an event), utmost point or degree;—a starting-post;—a restrictive ordinance or statute (of God, respecting things lawful or unlawful); castigations or punishments appointed to be inflicted (agreeably to the laws of Muhammad) for certain crimes;—adv. At most; at least; extremely, very (=ḥad-se; az ḥad; e.g. ḥad burā maʻlūm hotā hai):—ḥad bāṅdhnā (-kā or -ke), To fix, or determine, or mark the limits or boundaries (of), to bound, terminate; to define:—ḥad-bāhar, s.m.=ḥad-pār, q.v.:—ḥad-bast, ḥad-bandī, s.f. To punish severely:—ḥad-maḥdūd, 'Within defined limits,' a term in leases or farming contracts which recognizes the power of the farmer over all the lands and crops within the defined limits:—az ḥad, adv.=ḥad-se and be-ḥad, q.v.:—be-ḥad, adj. & adv. Without limit, unboundless, endless, infinite; immoderate, excessive, unfathomable;—immoderately, excessively, &c.
