Burraq and shab-e meraaj

Anisur Rahman

MORE BYAnisur Rahman

Burraq was the animal presented before Prophet Mohammad by archangel Jibreel (Gabriel) to transport him from the Kabaa in Mecca to Al-Quds in Jerusalem, and finally the seven skies. The word “burraq”, derived from the Arabic word “barq”, means lightening. So, this animal flew as fast as the lightening. It was sparkling white in colour and shorter than a horse in height. This night of prophet’s miraculous journey on the back of burraq happened in the twelfth year of his prophethood and is known as shab-e-meraaj (the night of ascension to heavens). This journey is mentioned in the Quran (Surah 53).

Reference: Aamad-o-raft mein tha har qadam barq-e-burraq/Murghzaar-e-chaman-e-aalam-e-baala baadal (Mohsin Kakorvi).
