Jibreel (Gabriel)
Jibreel, also mentioned as Gabriel in the Biblical narrative, is an archangel who carried the word of God to a chosen group of people. He appeared before Prophet Muhammad during his contemplation in the cave of Hira in Mecca. Over the course of a few days, Jibreel revealed the first chapter of the Quran to Muhammad. He also brought Burraq, a white horse-like animal to Muhammad to take him to the seven skies. He is mentioned further in the story of Maryam (Mary) as he appeared before her to inform her of being impregnated with Isa despite her virginity. Jibreel appeared further before Prophet Musa (Moses) in his childhood when Musa was asked by Firaun (Pharoah) to choose between a piece of coal and a ruby. As Musa reached for the ruby, Jibreel directed his hand towards the coal which caused him a speech problem later. Jibreel also made an appearance when Ibrahim (Abraham) was tied and thrown into the fire for challenging idol worship. Jibreel asked Ibrahim if he wanted any help to which he firmly replied that God alone would send his help and that he needed no help from others. Ibrahim was thus spared by the fire at God’s command even if he was thrown into it. Jibreel is mentioned thrice in the Bible when he brought messages from God to Daniel, Zechariah (Zakariya) and Mary (Maryam).
