Mann-o-Salwa

MORE BYAnisur Rahman

When the Israelites found their freedom from the onslaughts of the Pharaoh, the first thing they asked Musa (Moses) was to get them water to quench their thirst. Musa struck his magical staff on the ground which brought forth twelve fountains for twelve tribes. The next thing they asked for was food. Then Musa prayed to God for help. When they woke up early next morning, they found shining drops on the earth and on the branches of trees. When they tasted them they found that the drops tasted sweet and delicious. This was “Mann”. As the day matured and the sun showed brightly, they found little quails swarming around. They caught the quails and fried them to fill their hungry bellies. This was “Salwa”. Both mann and salwa made for a sweet and salted meals for them. However, a section of the Israelites looked at this divine blessing with doubt and disdain after which it ceased to descend from the heavens.
