Ladies have had significant contribution in every field and in Urdu literature too, the have a commendable presence. Gulnaar Aafreen is one of many voices that heralded the arrival of feminine power. Her original name was Mukhtar-un-Nisa begum and she wrote under the pen name, Gulnar. She was born on 15 August 1942 in Tonk and belongs to a Nawab family there. She started poetry in the latter part of 1956. Poetry was in her genes and her father, Wamiq Tonkwi was a poet during the era of Josh Maleehabai and Andaleeb Shadani. She moved to Libya two years before the fall of Dhaka. In 1985, she returned to Pakistan and since then, she has been living in Karachi. Besides poetry, she writes short stories. The titles of the collection of her works are Jaras-E-Gul, Taisha-E-Gham, Palak Palak Simti Rat, Phool Aurr Wo, Shaam Ka Tanha Sitara, Waqt Ka Maseeha, Aansu Shabnam Aurr Gulab, and Safeeney Jala Diye.
