adab-e-latif, lahore (established in 1935) adab-e-latif, a literary journal published from lahore, focused on all literary genres while placing a strong emphasis on progressive writers' movement ideologies. the first issue of this journal, owned by chaudhry barkat ali of punjab book depot, was compiled by talib ansari. many prominent figures served as its editors, including: faiz ahmed faiz, rajinder singh bedi, mumtaz mufti, qatil shifai, fikr taunsvi, ahmad nadeem qasmi, arif abdul matin, intizar husain, azhar javed, mirza adeeb, and siddiqa begum, among others. with editorial changes, the content and structure of the journal also evolved, introducing new columns and series. even the title of the editorial section changed over time, published under names like "pehla lafz" (first word) and "aghaaz" (the beginning). during intizar husain's tenure as editor, the journal focused heavily on discussions and debates, launching a series of intellectual dialogues. one such discussion was titled "mera masla kya hai?" (what is my problem?). in response to this, ahmad mushtaq humorously remarked: "i don’t exactly know what a poet's real problem is, but i do know what is definitely not my problem:" writing an article so impressive that qazi abdul wadood, mukhtaruddin arzu, and ghulam rasool mehr would admire it. publishing a book just to win the adamjee prize. catering to the likes and dislikes of literary enthusiasts. the impact of adab-e-latif anwar sadeed wrote: "intizar husain attempted to transform adab-e-latif into a journal of cultural significance. it became an experimental ground for literary and cultural discourses, encouraging readers and writers to listen to opposing views with an open mind." some special editions of adab-e-latif gained immense popularity, including: nazm-o-ghazal number (poetry special), afsana number (short story special), molvi abdul haq special, faiz special, and ghalib special.
