the magazine "khilauna" was a beloved monthly for children. its publication began in april 1948. the fame and popularity it gained with its high-quality and interesting presentations were unparalleled by any other magazine. the founder of the magazine was yusuf dehlvi, the owner of "shama" magazine. after him, yunus, idris, and ilyas dehlvi took over the editing. the office of "khilauna" was located on asaf ali road, ajmeri gate, new delhi. under the "shama" institution, there was a series of seven magazines, which were marketed as follows: for you, "shama, shabistan"; for your wife and daughter, "bano"; for older children, "mujrim"; and for younger children, "khilona"; for hindi speakers, "sushma" and "doshri". these seven magazines were as captivating and beautiful as the colors of a rainbow. however, the fame that "khilauna" achieved was unmatched by any of the others. this magazine received literary contributions from prominent writers such as krishan chander, balwant singh, adil rashid, salam machhli shairi, mirza adeeb, ismat chughtai, ram lal, khwaja ahmad abbas, wajida tabassum, a.r. khatun, razia sajad zaheer, jailani bano, khadija mastoor, shamim kirahani, satyapal anand, raja mehdi ali khan, rais ahmad jafari, jameela bano, roshan jahan, kanhaiya lal kapoor, saleha abid hussain, khwaja ahmad abbas, fikr tunisvi, jagan nath azad, rais amrohvi, ahmad nadim qasmi, sahir ludhianvi, and shafiuddin neer. "khilona" was published for children ranging from 8 to 80 years old. in this magazine, masterpieces like siraj anwar's "khufnaak jazeera", kali duniya, neeli duniya, zafar pyami's "sitaron ke qaidi", and krishan chander's "chiriyon ki alf leela" were published. the annual issue of "khilona" was very popular among children. it was made up of writings by renowned writers and was sent free to regular subscribers for just one and a half rupees. the price of the magazine was initially 50 new paise per month and 5 rupees 5 new paise per year, which later increased to 75 paise per month and 8 rupees per year. the regular issue of "khilona" was 60 to 70 pages long, while the annual and special issues consisted of 150 pages. the general structure of the magazine "khilauna" was as follows: a colorful cover with an image suitable for children, followed by an editorial section, a short article under a title, an adventurous and informative piece like "japan's ice ghosts", followed by prize pictures, prize cartoons, pictorial puzzles, stories, fiction series, poems, advertisements, etc. it was probably the only magazine that used to inquire about the likes and dislikes of children. due to its attractive layout, illustrations, and fine printing, it quickly became popular and famous. with the support of the shama group, it became a cherished magazine for children. among children's magazines, it holds a milestone status, an exemplary magazine whose absence is still felt today. this magazine ceased publication in 1987.
