About The Magazine

the magazine "naya daur", a monthly publication from lucknow, was first released in april 1955. it is published by the department of information, government of uttar pradesh. as a monthly magazine, its usual length ranges between 60 to 70 pages. in 1955, the magazine was priced at 4 annas per issue and 3 rupees annually, whereas by 2019, these prices had increased to 15 rupees per issue and 180 rupees annually. "naya daur" is essentially an evolved version of the magazine "ittila’at" (information). this transformation was explained in the first issue of naya daur: "readers of ittila’at must have noticed various formal and substantial changes in recent months, culminating in the form of naya daur. the purpose of publishing naya daur is to promote healthy literature. if literature serves as a mirror of national life and a reflection of social life, it must contribute to the constructive mission of inspiring the public with a passion for development and instilling enthusiasm for shaping a new future." the slogan of naya daur is: "a representative of language, literature, culture, and civilization." the early issues of naya daur did not mention its editors, compilers, or designers. however, from august 1956 onwards, the names of the editor and compiler began to appear on the initial pages. during this period, ali jawad zaidi served as the editor, while farhatullah ansari was the assistant editor. since this magazine was published directly by the government, it remained free from political and literary controversies. from the very beginning, naya daur received contributions from esteemed writers and poets, including: shameem karhani, hamidullah afsar, farhatullah ansari, ali jawad zaidi, firaq gorakhpuri, arsh malsiyani, nazish partapgarhi, nisar ahmad farooqi, kamal ahmad siddiqui, nashoor wahidi, ali abbas hussaini, jawaharlal nehru, fiza ibn-e-faizi, niaz fatehpuri, hafeez banarasi, and jagan nath azad. after this, sabahuddin umar took over as editor, and in his very first issue, an autograph and picture of jigar moradabadi were published. contributions from renowned figures such as abdul majid daryabadi, ejaz siddiqui, khwaja ahmad abbas, moeen ahsan jazbi, talok chand mahroom, shaz tamkanat, and naresh kumar shaad were also featured. it was considered a great honor for poets and writers to have their work published in naya daur. the magazine also published special issues in august and occasionally released other themed editions and dedicated sections. after sabahuddin umar, the editorship of naya daur was held by: khursheed ahmad ameer ahmad siddiqui syed amjad hussain shah nawaz qureshi syed khalid ahmad wazahat hussain rizvi despite the changes in editorial leadership, the content and format of naya daur remained consistent. interestingly, even after nearly a century, the magazine is still handwritten before being printed. notable special issues of naya daur: ta'meeri adab (constructive literature) issue jawaharlal nehru issue asar lucknavi issue mahatma gandhi issue ghalib issue amir khusro issue nawal kishore issue two special issues on firaq gorakhpuri half-century issue kaifi azmi issue
