About The Magazine

"sawera" – a representative of progressive literature "sawera" was a journal that served as a representative of progressive literature. it was first published in 1940 by chaudhry nazir ahmad and played a significant role in the promotion and dissemination of progressive literature. with the change of editors, the journal’s tone and direction also evolved. some of the notable figures who contributed to its compilation included zahur kashmiri, ahmad rahi, sahir ludhianvi, ahmad nadeem qasmi, fikr taunsvi, arif abdul matin, muhammad saleem-ur-rehman, hanif ramay, sadiq shahin, and salahuddin mahmood. the identity of sawera transformed alongside these contributors. initially, its masthead carried the slogan "representative of progressive artists", but later, it was changed to "literature, art, and culture". in its early years, sawera had a distinctly progressive character, but when salahuddin mahmood took over as editor, quranic verses were added at the beginning of each issue. during ahmad nadeem qasmi’s tenure as editor, he wrote in an editorial: "sawera is a bi-monthly selection of the literary achievements of young indian artists. therefore, it does not point towards any specific ideological destination but rather explores the vast and boundless horizons of life and the universe. every issue of sawera is the bearer of a new dawn, and thus, our objectives and ambitions can be summed up in just these words: sawera will be a movement for the new urdu literature." a significant statement was also made by the editorial team: "the contents of this journal will not be dictated by individual writers but will instead reflect literary trends and movements." sawera published several important articles and research papers. one of its most notable contributions was "arabic literature before islam" by khursheed rizvi, which was published in 17-18 parts. the journal covered a variety of literary genres and included several recurring sections: "jaan pehchaan" (acquaintance) – a well-received segment. "mehfil" (gathering) – a section where writers discussed "why i write?". special emphasis was placed on translations of french, european, and english literature.
