Khalil Farhat Karanjavi was born on April 16, 1934, in Karanja Lad, Washim, Maharashtra. He started writing poetry from a very young age and composed his first Ghazal at just 12 years old. In his journey as a poet, he considered only his relish for good poetry as his guide. At the time when Khalil Farhat started writing poetry, the effects of the progressive movement, prevalent in Urdu literature, were spread in all corners of the country. This movement had a direct impact on his poetic thought, and his poetry largely vouches for it. His poetry highlighted contemporary issues as well as romantic ideas. In the fifties, he performed the editorial duties of the weekly "Hum Log" from Akola. He was also a regular columnist for the Janata Parishad, a Marathi newspaper published by Karanja Lad. As a senior official of the Muslim League, he took many steps for the welfare of the nation and the community. Through his transparent and clear participation in politics, he carried out numerous reformative works in society. He also founded an organization called Anjuman-e-Tameer-e-Millat in Karanja Lad, from which hundreds of students are studying.
Despite his meager education, Khalil Farhat's eloquent vocab made him one of the leading language scholars of the time. He was fluent in Persian, Arabic, Hindi, and Marathi, and extremely well versed in Urdu. He tried his hand at almost all genres of poetry except Qasida. He passed away on 19 April 2007 at Karanja Lad. A collection of poems, titled ’Zakhm-e-Hunar’, was published by his son Waseem Farhat (Alig) after his death. His poetic creations are also included in the textbooks of the state of Maharashtra. The magazine 'Urdu', published under the editorship of Wasim Farhat (Alig), from the city of Amravati, commemorated his unique personality.
