Tahreek, Delhi

Gopal Mittal’s magazine Tehreek (first published in March 1953) was an important Urdu journal. Among its editors were Makhmoor Saeedi, Tamkeen Kazmi, and Prem Gopal Mittal. This magazine was completely opposed to the Progressive Writers' Movement. It frequently engaged in intense debates with progressive writers, and its editorials were often sharp and critical. It also covered literary, social, and political topics in its editorial discussions, ensuring diversity in themes. The contents of this magazine were highly valuable. One of its key contributions was the publication of essays reviewing the literature of other languages. These writings were of great significance as they provided insights into the direction, attitudes, and trends of different literary traditions. Tehreek gained great popularity through its special editions, which included the Jigar Number, Ghalib Number, Russian Revolution Number, Silver Jubilee Number, Tarasov Number, China Number, and Twenty Years of Literature Number.
