ham apne jism-o-rūh ke andar hī le chaleñ
chal talḳhī-e-hayāt tujhe ghar hī le chaleñ
bāzār-e-be-adab meñ jo saste haiñ āj-kal
tahzīb-e-ahd-e-nau ke vo zevar hī le chaleñ
shahr-e-vafā kī koī alāmat zarūr ho
gauhar nahīñ mile haiñ to patthar hī le chaleñ
mausam kā koī Thiik nahīñ kab ho mehrbāñ
sahrā kī samt koī samundar hī le chaleñ
zaḳhmoñ kā indimāl to mumkin nahīñ magar
dāman pe likh ke naam sitamgar hī le chaleñ
kuchh to subūt chāhiye arbāb-e-shahr ko
āñkhoñ meñ rakh ke gaañv kā manzar hī le chaleñ
un ko yaqīñ to aa.e vafā kā kisī tarah
un ke huzūr 'shād' mirā sar hī le chaleñ

bazar-e-be-adab mein jo saste hain aaj-kal
tahzib-e-ahd-e-nau ke wo zewar hi le chalen
shahr-e-wafa ki koi alamat zarur ho
gauhar nahin mile hain to patthar hi le chalen
mausam ka koi Thik nahin kab ho mehrban
sahra ki samt koi samundar hi le chalen
zaKHmon ka indimal to mumkin nahin magar
daman pe likh ke nam sitamgar hi le chalen
kuchh to subut chahiye arbab-e-shahr ko
aankhon mein rakh ke ganw ka manzar hi le chalen
un ko yaqin to aae wafa ka kisi tarah
un ke huzur 'shad' mera sar hi le chalen
