jaan-lewa jab uski furqat thi
jān-levā jab us kī furqat thī
tark-e-ulfat kī kyā zarūrat thī
sab divāna samajhte the mujh ko
is qadar aap se mohabbat thī
jis ko dekhā hai vo fasāna hai
jo zabāñ par thī vo haqīqat thī
jal rahe haiñ janāb barzaḳh meñ
piir sāhib se un kī nisbat thī
mujh ko insān lag rahā thā vo
jab talak yaar us meñ ġhairat thī
chand sāñseñ nahīñ ḳharīd sakā
be-shumār us ke paas daulat thī
us ko apnā sake na ham 'ātif'
jis kī dil pe hamāre qudrat thī
