na māh-rū na kisī māhtāb se huī thī
hameñ to pahlī mohabbat kitāb se huī thī
fareb-e-kul hai zamīñ aur namūna-e-azdād
ki ibtidā hī gunāh-o-savāb se huī thī
bas ek shab kī kahānī nahīñ ki bhuul sakeñ
har ek shab hī mumāsil itaab se huī thī
vajūd-e-chashm thā Thahre samundaroñ kī misāl
numūd-e-hālat-e-dil ik habāb se huī thī
jazā-e-ishq-e-haqīqī rahī talab apnī
ḳhatā-e-ishq-e-majāzī janāb se huī thī
usī se tīra-shabī meñ hai manzaroñ kā vajūd
vo raushnī jo mashiyyat ke baab se huī thī
vahī to jehd-e-musalsal kī ibtidā thī 'alī'
jab āshnā.ī qadam kī rikāb se huī thī
