thā muḳhtasar vajūd jasīm-o-jarī na thī
kirnoñ se āftāb kī shabnam Darī na thī
aate the us zabān pe bas lafz-e-bā-vaqār
vo mo'tabar zabān thī mīThī chhurī na thī
arbāb-e-fikr-o-phan bhī ta.assub kī zad pe haiñ
duniyā burī to thī magar itnī burī na thī
'ābid' ko bād-e-marg bhī rakheñge yaad sab
jo zindagī guzārī vo bāzīgarī na thī

aate the us zaban pe bas lafz-e-ba-waqar
wo mo'tabar zaban thi miThi chhuri na thi
arbab-e-fikr-o-phan bhi tassub ki zad pe hain
duniya buri to thi magar itni buri na thi
'abid' ko baad-e-marg bhi rakhenge yaad sab
jo zindagi guzari wo bazigari na thi
