aur phir ek din yuuñ ḳhizāñ aa ga.ī

    ābnūsī tanoñ ke barahna shajar

    sar-nigūñ saf-ba-saf pesh-e-dīvār-o-dar

aur chāroñ taraf un ke bikhre hue

    zard patte diloñ ke sar-e-rahguzar

jis ne chāhā vo guzrā unheñ rauñd kar

aur kisī ne zarā fuġhāñ bhī na

    When Autumn Came

This is the way that autumn came to the trees:

it stripped them down to the skin,

    left their ebony bodies naked.

It shook out their hearts, the yellow leaves,

    scattered them over the ground.

Anyone could trample them out of shape

undisturbed by a single moan of protest.

aur phir ek din yun KHizan aa gai

    When Autumn Came

aap hi aap sab KHak mein aa gire

koi ek peD phir lahlahane lage

    koi ek naghma-gar chahchahane lage

This is the way that autumn came to the trees:

it stripped them down to the skin,

    left their ebony bodies naked.

It shook out their hearts, the yellow leaves,

    scattered them over the ground.
