In 1958, the Association of Progressive Writers (Bombay) presented Daud Ghazi with the first prize for this poem in a literary competition.
कौन जाने कि ये ख़ुर्शीद है ना-ख़ूब कि ख़ूब
चाँद अच्छा कि बुरा कौन बता सकता है
ख़ुश कि ना-ख़ुश हैं ये शमएँ ये सितारे ये शफ़क़
कौन ये पर्दा-ए-असरार उठा सकता है
हाँ ये मुमकिन है शुआएँ हों ज़रर का बाइ'स
कौन कहता है उजालों से करो कस्ब-ए-ज़ियाँ
रौशनी आग से निकली है जला सकती है
बात इतनी भी समझ सकते नहीं हम इंसाँ
इल्म मज़दूर को फ़नकार बना देता है
इल्म मंसूर को होशियार बना देता है
इल्म अल्फ़ाज़ को तलवार बना देता है
इल्म तिनके को भी पतवार बना देता है
पाँव के छाले को रहवार बना देता है
इक तही-दस्त को सालार बना देता है
रौशनी गुल न करो रात अभी बाक़ी है
ज़ीस्त समझी नहीं जो बात अभी बाक़ी है
ख़्वाहिश-ए-चश्मा-ए-ज़ुल्मात अभी बाक़ी है
पए नैसाँ हो जो बरसात अभी बाक़ी है
इल्म एक नूर है ये नूर बिखर जाने दो
सुब्ह-ए-इरफ़ाँ को ज़रा और निखर जाने दो
राह-ए-हस्ती के ख़म-ओ-पेच सँवर जाने दो
