aaj is shahr-e-mo.attar ne pukārā hai mujhe
aaj phir nauha-kunāñ haiñ yahāñ galiyoñ vaale
ye vo galiyāñ haiñ jo ḳhushbū kī qabā.eñ thiiñ kabhī
ye vo chehre haiñ jo mash.hūr the kaliyoñ vaale
inhī galiyoñ se thī vābasta na.ī fikr kī rah
unhīñ galiyoñ meñ ma.ānī ke sabaq milte the
vahshat-e-daur-e-siyāsat pe huā kartī thī bahas
aur qalam hañste hue zāviye ban jaate the
mastī-e-tīra-shabī par hai gunah kā ḳhāka
shaiḳh-o-mullā-o-kalīsā ho ki shah kā ḳhāka
sūrat-e-maz.hab-o-īmān-o-mavaddat pe ḳhaak
aur ik pal meñ kisī dīn-e-panah kā ḳhāka
jo adū haiñ vo hamāre hī adū kab haiñ faqat
ham hadaf kab haiñ ki un kā hadaf āsānī hai
un ko ma.alūm nahīñ ham haiñ koī shaukat-e-zau
ilm kā qatl faqat maz.habī nādānī hai
is se pahle bhī to aisī hī qayāmat TuuTī
is se pahle bhī sajā ilm kā maqtal logo
is se pahle bhī to vahshat kā chalan aam huā
is se pahle bhī to barsā yahī bādal logo
nok-e-ḳhanjar bhī vahī shahr kā maqtal bhī vahī
maktab-o-tifl rah-e-ilm kī gardan huī daaġh
shab huvaidā huī tārīkiyāñ jab jab bhī baḌhīñ
ḳhilqat-e-shahr-e-farozāñ ne jalā.e haiñ charāġh
irtiqā shar yā sharī.at se nahīñ ruk saktā
ye qasīda bhī na.e ahd se paivasta hai
ya.anī sūraj jo bujhegā to jal uTTheñge diye
kārvāñ sub.h kā us lau hī se vābasta hai
phir baneñge na.e ḳhāke ki yahī sūrat-e-shab
vahshat-e-daur-e-siyāsat kī gavāhī hogī
shahr bhī shahr gulistāñ kī tarah jāgegā
lafz ke haath se dahshat kī tabāhī hogī
aaj is shahr-e-moattar ne pukara hai mujhe
aaj phir nauha-kunan hain yahan galiyon wale
ye wo galiyan hain jo KHushbu ki qabaen thin kabhi
ye wo chehre hain jo mashhur the kaliyon wale
inhi galiyon se thi wabasta nai fikr ki rah
unhin galiyon mein maani ke sabaq milte the
wahshat-e-daur-e-siyasat pe hua karti thi bahas
aur qalam hanste hue zawiye ban jate the
masti-e-tira-shabi par hai gunah ka KHaka
shaiKH-o-mulla-o-kalisa ho ki shah ka KHaka
surat-e-mazhab-o-iman-o-mawaddat pe KHak
aur ek pal mein kisi din-e-panah ka KHaka
jo adu hain wo hamare hi adu kab hain faqat
hum hadaf kab hain ki un ka hadaf aasani hai
un ko malum nahin hum hain koi shaukat-e-zau
ilm ka qatl faqat mazhabi nadani hai
is se pahle bhi to aisi hi qayamat TuTi
is se pahle bhi saja ilm ka maqtal logo
is se pahle bhi to wahshat ka chalan aam hua
is se pahle bhi to barsa yahi baadal logo
nok-e-KHanjar bhi wahi shahr ka maqtal bhi wahi
maktab-o-tifl rah-e-ilm ki gardan hui dagh
shab huwaida hui tarikiyan jab jab bhi baDhin
KHilqat-e-shahr-e-farozan ne jalae hain charagh
irtiqa shar ya shariat se nahin ruk sakta
ye qasida bhi nae ahd se paiwasta hai
yani suraj jo bujhega to jal uTThenge diye
karwan subh ka us lau hi se wabasta hai
phir banenge nae KHake ki yahi surat-e-shab
wahshat-e-daur-e-siyasat ki gawahi hogi
shahr bhi shahr gulistan ki tarah jagega
lafz ke hath se dahshat ki tabahi hogi
