Jatinder Vir Yakhmi, 'Jayaveer' was born in 1946 in the town 'Khanna' in Ludhiana District of Punjab. He obtained his Physics (Honours) graduate degree from Kurukshetra University. Just after that he moved to Mumbai when he was selected to serve as a scientist in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Between 1966 and 2010, he worked at BARC and rose to become Head of Technical Physics & Prototype Engineering Division, and retired as Associate Director of Physics Group, BARC. In 1975, he received a Ph.D. degree in Physics from Mumbai University.
After his formal retirement, Dr. Yakhmi was appointed DAE Raja Ramanna Fellow at Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai and Honorary Chairman of Atomic Energy Education Society in 2012, and he is currently serving in both these roles.
He has made notable contributions in research areas of soft matter, magnetism and superconductivity. He has published 450 research papers in reputed journals, and has a patent on artificial heart pump, and was elected a Fellow of National Academy of Sciences in 1994. He has visited developed coutries several times as Invited Professor, and continues to visit foreign laboratories to deliver lectures.
Dr. Yakhmi got attracted to Urdu ghazals in his college days. He started writing his own poetry about 20 years ago. First collection of his poems, 'Izhaar' was published in 2004, and the second book 'Ehsaas' in 2014.
