Sujit Sahgal is a poet of Urdu who writes under the pen name - Haasil. He is also a published author and writes extensively on rural India and global agriculture. He is an MBA and a banker by profession and has worked for nearly 30 years in leading global investment banks in India, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Sujit belongs to Hyderabad and grew up in a highly literature and art focused environment and fell in love with the Urdu zabaan when he was barely 10-11 years old. Both his parents are native Urdu speakers. He started reading Urdu poetry and kalaam of famous poets like Ghalib, Iqbal and also more contemporary poets like Dr. Basheer Badr when he was 12-13. At the age of 13 he started writing ghazals and nazms though in devnagri script as a self taught poet.
Over the last 35 years he has been writing on and off juggling his family, kids and career. Since the last 6-7 years he has re-started writing more regularly. He has more recently been training under a well regarded ustaad.
Sujit writes on relationships, philosophy and social issues that people of all ages face. His favorite poets include Basheer Badr, Ahmed Faraaz, Jaun Eliya — to name a few. Sujit has been lately experimenting with short and very long behrs as well as long multi-word radeef and rare qafiyas as a way to challenge himself. His first collection of ghazals and nazms is planned to get published this winter. Sujit has been reciting at festivals like Rekhta, Jashneadab, Pasbaaneadab since last 2-3 years.
Sujit moved to India from Singapore in 2016 and resides in Mumbai with his wife and pet Labrador.
His hobbies include horseback riding , skiing and golf apart from his poetry and deep interest in rural India and agriculture. He is also a travel enthusiast. This couplet he wrote probably sums up his multi-faceted personality.
Koi qafiya na mila saka koi vazn hi ko gira gaya
Main to us zameen ki hoon ghazal jise phir kabhi n kaha gaya
And in the same breath he also says
Tair ke upar hi upar se khud ko haasil kehte ho?
Sagar mein utro to samjho gehraai kya hoti hai.
Sujit is currently the head of institutional equities for HSBC, India.
