Storyteller of the marginalised

The prominent subjects of Manto’s stories were always the marginalized members of society. From prostitutes to persecuted minorities, Manto accurately captured the essence of their being and suffering. His realistic portrayals rather than overly-sympathetic sketches distinguish his writings from his contemporaries.

Fiercely vocal and Unapollegetic

His stories were often alleged to be obscene. His response to such allegations was, “My stories are a reflection of society. If my stories are vulgar, so is the society.” He faced six charges of obscenity for his writing, though he got fined for just one.

Playwright for All India Radio

Manto moved to Delhi in 1941 to join All India Radio. His stay was a short one, just lasting eighteen months. But, this period proved to be his most productive. He wrote countless Radio Dramas for All India Radio, and four collections of his Radio Dramas were published.

His Novel

Manto is known for his short stories but he published several collections of dramas and articles. He wrote a single Novel in his lifetime with the title ‘Baghair Unwaan Ke’ which roughly translates to ‘Without a title’.

Why I write fiction Saadat Hasan Manto

I write fiction primarily because I am addicted to writing fiction like I am addicted to alcohol. If I don't write fiction, I feel like I haven't worn clothes, or I haven't bathed, or I haven't drunk alcohol. I don't write fiction. The truth is that fiction writes me. I am an uneducated individual. I have written more than twenty books, but I occasionally wonder who it is actually. Who has written such fine stories, which are being prosecuted day in and day out in the court?

Save India from its leaders Saadat Hasan Manto

This noise has been bothering us for quite some time- save India from this and that, but the truth is that India needs to be saved from the people who are making such a racket. These people are masters of making tumult. Without a doubt, their hearts are devoid of purity. When these people go to sleep in their extravagant beds at night after a rousing speech at an assembly, their minds are completely blank. Not even the smallest portion of their nights was spent contemplating the disease in which India is mired.
